WHAT IS CELLWELL

CellWell is a thin film micropatterned nanofiber hydrogel substrate that fits a single cell within each well and facilitates high throughput fluorescence imaging of chondrocytes and has a mechanical stiffness closer to that of the pericellular matrix (PCM) of the articular cartilage.


The substrate composition was chosen to recapitulate the extracellular matric (ECM) of articular cartilage wherein a hydrogel models cartilage proteoglycans and embedded nanofibers model collagen II fibers.
It was originally developed with chondrocytes in mind, to improve cell culture protocols. Using these micropatterned wells with current cell-culture protocols, the CellWell is designed to maintain proper morphology and phenotype of chondrocytes long-term (≥ 28 days).


Additionally, it is highly transparent and compatible with standard microscopy equipment to allow for fluorescent microscopy of single cells. The open well design allows for immediate and universal treatments to be applied to all wells simultaneously.

Chondrocyte cells lose morphology and start spreading rapidly when plated on traditional monolayer culture dishes (Top) whereas the chondrocytes plated on CellWell maintain the spheroidal morphology.
